ASHRAE standards are widely recognised as the leading source for dictating all HVAC requirements around the world, and are a USA based body. The ASHRAE (American Society of Heating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) standards handbook contains all design requirements and is a comprehensive guide to HVAC worldwide standards.  However, given that the handbook is produced in the USA, there are industry specific gaps for applying standards to the Australian market.

Enter; DA19 Handbook, produced by AIRAH. Taking data from ASHRAE, it has created a handbook adjusted to suit Australian requirements.

Who are AIRAH?

AIRAH stands for Australian Institute of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heating, and is an organisation that specifically dictates industry standards for the unique Australian HVAC market. Utilised by technicians in the Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, Heating and Ventilation trades, the AIRAH DA19 handbook is the standard to which all work performed in Australia is measured.

 What is the DA19 Handbook?

DA19 is an HVAC&R Maintenance handbook, and offers standards and levels for installing, maintaining and calibrating HVAC&R equipment within Australia.

Different areas within similar commercial environments have different outdoor air requirements, so by having a determined minimum standard, it allows technicians to maintain various spaces within the same building, to ensure they all have adequate outdoor airflow, for optimum health and safety.

 How are DA19 standards applied?

For example, in an office space:

Boardrooms have a minimum requirement of 15Ls per person, for 1m2 net floorspace.

However

Office Areas have minimum requirement of 10Ls per person, for 10m2 net floorspace.

This shows that despite these being similar style workspaces, they have quite different fresh air requirements.

Another example would be in the Food and Beverage space:

Bars have a minimum requirement of 20Ls per person, for 1m2 net floorspace.

However

Fast Food Outlets have a minimum requirement of 15Ls per person, for 1m2 net floorspace.

Again, to the untrained technician, these may seem like similar spaces, but thanks to the knowledge offered by the DA19 handbook, expert technicians know and appreciate the nuanced differences of these spaces and can ensure they are maintained appropriately.

All Chatfield OzCool technicians operate in accordance with the AIRAH DA19 handbook, so if you would like peace of mind, knowing your HVAC maintenance is being conducted according with the DA19 handbook, book in a Chatfield OzCool technician, today.
