Air Conditioning Insurance Claims in Melbourne: Does Your Policy Cover Fusion Damage?

Many Melbourne homeowners invest in air conditioning to keep their homes comfortable throughout the year, but few stop to consider whether their insurance policy would cover the cost of repairs or replacement if their system was damaged by an electrical fault.

Recently, our Chatfield OzCool team attended a luxury residential property where numerous Daikin split system air conditioners had failed following a significant electrical event. The damage was extensive, affecting critical components including compressors, control boards, and inverter systems. In many cases, the air conditioning units were beyond economical repair and required complete replacement.

The good news? The homeowners were able to make a successful air conditioning insurance claim because their policies included cover for fusion damage.

With the insurance claim approved, we were able to remove and replace the 16 indoor air conditioning units across this luxury residence. The new units were an upgraded version of the same model number, so were able to cover the same sizes on the wall. The new units were an upgraded version, which meant improved economical performance. New backing plates were also required, so without insurance coverage, this would have been a significant replacement expense to the homeowner.

What Is Fusion Damage?

Fusion damage is a common insurance term used to describe damage caused by electrical currents, power surges, short circuits, or overheating of electrical components. For modern split system air conditioners, fusion can affect sensitive electronics, motors, compressors, and circuit boards.

As air conditioning systems become increasingly sophisticated, they can also become more vulnerable to electrical faults. A single power surge or electrical failure can result in costly repairs or complete system replacement.

Why Melbourne Homeowners Should Check Their Insurance Policy

Many homeowners assume that damage caused by an electrical fault will automatically be covered by their home insurance. However, this is not always the case. Some insurers include fusion cover as a standard feature, while others may offer it as an optional extra or apply specific exclusions.

If your split system air conditioner suffers fusion damage and your policy does not provide cover, you could be responsible for the full replacement cost.

Checking your policy now could save considerable expense and frustration later.
